Stadhuis Den Haag tijdelijk theater

  PORTRAIT

“…When I look at the paintings of Armando Bergallo it is clear to me that here speaks the South American temperament, what I called before: leaning to the baroque. In the beginning he made realistic paintings with a strong emotional content. Later on in the first few years of the eighties, he gradually changed his style to a more abstract way of painting. His style became more and more expressive, using mixed techniques. In the second half of the eighties, he returned to a more outspoken abstract-expressionistic

These paintings show hectic brushwork and strong colours, and the use of papier-mâché and other materials to create a relief like effect. His last work shows a development towards more subdued colours and a spatial three-dimension effect…”.

"While there are quite a few differences between the president of the United States and the mayor of Amsterdam, they do have one thing in common each has a backyard which in some way is related to Latin America. There is, however, one noteworthy difference between them. In contrast to the strained relations between the United States and Latin America, the relations maintained in my backyard, which directly borders of the Latin American artist’ collective, Taller Amsterdam, are peaceful if not excellent. Taller is a household name in Amsterdam, and as their neighbour I took this for granted until an extensive trip took me to latin America where I saw the word ‘taller’ (‘workshop’)

The group Taller enjoys great success. Several newspaper headlines illustrate this: Trouw September 7, 1987, ‘…Taller presents magnificent music and images’, Libération November 24, 1985, ‘Taller Amsterdam strikes once again’. There are dozens of articles in Dutch, German, English, French, Italian and Spanish in the same tone and of the same opinion. In the course of the past years, hundreds of people participated in all of group’s artistic activities. Hector Vilche and Armando Bergallo are the pivotal artists of Taller Amsterdam; they are the great movers, the brains and the innovators.

Taller Amsterdam occupies a unique position in Dutch art. Their work integrates many art forms: music, the theatre, the visual arts and in recent years the opera.

The members of the Advisory Committee of the Friends of Taller, among whom, Katinka Dittrich, Franz Marijnen, Jack Lang and myself, are convinced that the group produces innovative art".

  REPORTAGE

No truth without laughter

The cheerful science of Taller Amsterdam

“…The joy one finds outside the system is starkly contrasting to the metaphorical fear, the guilt and the discomfort one so often finds inside it. Armando Bergallo and Hector Vilche do not resist the incomprehensibility and chaotic character of reality. Neither do they pine nostalgically for the time when they still had the security of Marxism. That would only be a sign of the incapability to accept the world as it is. That the world is incomprehensible and without meaning, or that it keeps its meaning permanently hidden to us, shouldn’t worry us or fill us with a longing for better times. We only need to become strong enough to live a life without absolute certainties.
Perhaps I should therefore tear up this article with a smile. Taller’s work is incomprehensible and elusive. At random it gives out signals that undermine each essentialism, each sense of continuity. One has to let oneself be dragged along by the shocking rhythm with which they create new patterns of signals and one has to be prepared to regard each interpretation as temporary, the subdivision into paragraphs and alineas, the guarding of the logic which makes one sentence flow from the other, is ridiculous. It is a form of self-protection that keeps us from being open to the impossibility to synchronize this work with the image we have of it.
Finally I would like to quote ‘The Name of the Rose’ by Umberto Eco.
‘Perhaps he who loves people is obliged to make them laugh at the truth, to make the truth laugh, for the only truth consists of learning how to liberate oneself of the unhealthy passion for the truth’.”

  EXPOSITION

Expositie Museum ‘De Beyerd’, Breda.

A suivre donc.

Bergallo “beeldhouwer”

First exposition Taller de Montevideo in Europe

“A group of four artists from Uruguay: Bergallo, Bollar, Vila and Vilche appeared suddenly under the grey sky of the northern part of the Netherlands.
They brought with them the sun of their country, the imagination and the spontaneity of their Latin spirit.
In the small Frisian village Piaam, far away from any centers of culture, they composed their bright colored works, made of light materials.
Even the small fluffy feathers, colored in blue and red, play a role in the gay rhythm of their assemblages. In their work there is no urge to preach any theories: the pleasure of spontaneous creation, without pretention gives the charm to their work.

PROGRESS PASSION

1987

Na “The Desert”, “The Night of the Third Day” en vele andere projecten, verwachten we dat “Progress Passion” zeker zo veel succes zal hebben…".

‘Our Music theatre is like the work of Brueghel or Bosch’.

“…A letter from the Berliner Festspiele to Taller: ‘The central theme of Berlin 1988 will be: European avant-garde in all fields of art. Naturally, also in the field of theatre. Berlin will attract theatre projects that make use of music and media, projects that fall beyond the traditional forms of drama, opera or musical. For years Taller Amsterdam has been one of the most interesting theatre groups in Europe, mind-broadening in a very professional and respect commanding way. After “The Desert”, “The Night of the Third Day” and a lot of other projects, we expect “Progress Passion” to have the same amount of success…".

“…Work of the moderate, bald-headed and clean-shaven Armando Bergallo on the other hand is rather exuberant. His colours, which are primary, bright and abundant, are not satisfied with the demarcated forms. When they work together on a new project, an outsider may sometimes get the impression that they are having a fierce quarrel instead of a discussion. ‘The differences between us have become clearer through the years. When we work on a theatre project we put in the contrasts together: optimism and pessimism, day and night, intuition and reason’…".

“…’The cooperation of Lucas Vis, the Dutch Blazers Ensemble and the Dutch Chamber Choir strongly changed the prospect for Taller’, Vilche and Bergallo say. ‘After all the recognition we received abroad, these people help us to get integrated here as well. “progress Passion” will be performed in nine Dutch theatres, among which the new Music Theatre in Amsterdam, where Dutch productions do not easily get in’…".

“…For La Villette in Paris both artists want to make ‘a great and especially free spectacle’. ‘An enormous explosion, in which we want to use all elements: opera, music hall, visual arts, theatre. We will not be bound by a traditional stage. It is an enormous building with immense opportunities. The director of La Villette, François Barré, knows our work. He said: this building is not a theatre, make something and use the entire building. The fact that in La Villette countless litres of blood have flown there through the years – there was an immense abattoir – plays a part in their thoughts about the project. The analogy with the French Revolution goes without saying…".

  REPORTAGE

The ball is round.

“The ball is round. The adage is not new. On the contrarily, one might say it is a cliché. Coaches use it to indicate the outcome of a football game is always unpredictable.

This saying may well be a cliché; nonetheless it remains a unique statement. After all, in which other situation could one use a certainty: the ball is round, to express an uncertainty: the outcome?

The earth is round. By analogy with the above-mentioned statement this one symbolizes the instability of human nature and the precariousness of mankind’s existence. The uncertainty related to the outcome of the football game here attains cosmic proportions. Visual artists have always made cunning use of this idea in their creations. The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam owns two paintings by a seventeenth century master from Utrecht, Hendrick Terbrugghen, representing the two philosophers Heraclitus and Democritus. The first is depicted shedding tears of grief while leaning on a terrestrial globe, the second laughs while resting his elbow on a celestial globe. Armando Bergallo and Hector Vilche could well have been Terbrugghen’s models. Not by physical resemblance but due to the distress and joy they alternately express in their creations. With an unbridled creative urge these two artists produce both chaos and order. Their orientation tends towards universality. They make universal theatre.

The ball is round. The same goes for the theatre. The name of Shakespeare’s famous theatre in London illustrates this: ‘The Globe’.

The world is round and the ‘boards’ are flat. Could it be possible that the reality occurs on stage whereas the audience is just an illusion?

Those attending Taller’s performances might ask themselves this question. Captivated by the dazzling and exalting discipline of the Tallerian chaos the spectator will have the sensation that this seat is empty. Dance, text, mime, music, lights, colours, respite, action, space, time, contents and emptiness, join in this dramatic show, mesmerize the spectator and take him outside of himself.

But the actual relief, the catharsis comes later, as one realizes that that the impression made by the performance is unforgettable. At that point Taller sets its indelible stamp on your memory.

The ball and the theatre are and, indeed, will always remain round.

Taller weer overrompelend.

The Night of the Third Day ‘n succes.

“… On nous reproché une absence de clarté. Mais nous faisons profession de cette absence.

A raison.

La rédemption s’effectue dans l’arc-en-ciel made in Broadway.

REPORTAGE

Plastic World

DESIGNING in plastics is now one of the most appealing of all challenges offered to the architect and industrial designer. Any London perambulator interested in domestic design can see in the showrooms of Zarach, Aibrizzi, Presents and General Trading, a remarkable range of Perspex objects, varying from furniture to decorative objects.
One of the most experimental designers in plastic is Armando Bergallo, a South American now working in London. As he is an in - tenor designer - decorator, he has extended his range from furniture to objects, both functional and decorative. He thinks that any living-room ought to suit the basic needs and comforts of its tenant, but should also provide a high degree of visual stimulation as well. He likes to experiment with all sorts of materials, but especially with Perspex. He also designs in Perspex objects related to more traditional materials, such as wood and metal. The table on the opposite page, below right, is a typical example of his work in this sphere: it is big enough to have several people sitting around it, and it is also an object to promote continuous visual pleasure, with its interplay of colours in a Perspex box.
Little wonder that more and more designers are turning to the challenge of plastics.

Colour and fantasy in the bathroom

Putting pattern on the walls is one of the simplest means of creating a decorative bathroom. Pattern detracts from the hard, aseptic look of most bathroom equipment and adds a sense of gaiety to a room which, thanks to its basic necessity for efficiency above all other considerations, is usually far too sober and stark for overmuch visual pleasure.

The extravagantly floriated and figured mural by Armando Bergallo has transformed a bathroom (originally the wine cellar) in a house in Harley Street, in London’s West End, into the exotic cave of a room you see here. Mr. Bergallo is a South American artist, member of the Taller de Montevideo group, now working in London.

Interior decorator Esteban Cerda has used a Chinoiserie paper to cover walls and bath panel in the bathroom of his house in St. John’s Wood.

Although few of us could afford to engage in the decorative flights of fancy shown in the eastern bathroom, there are touches aplenty here which would provide motifs for occidental bathrooms.

Not quite so exotic, but very pretty and within anybody’s reach, is the sort of patterned wallcoverings shown in a French bathroom with matching fabric used for curtains, and in a bathroom with a Vogue bath and paper by Coles.

Las Semillas de la Aurora

“…In most countries ‘devils metal’ means gold. in Bolivia it is bitterly used to describe the country’s main natural resorce: tin. A feature film is now being shot in England which deals with a massacre by machine gun and aerial. bombardment of Bolivian tin miners (milicianos) in 1966 by a combined force of’ Bolivian and American troops. It is worth reiterating the history of the 1966 massacre to give some idea of the relevance and the importance of the film: a relevance shared by ‘Z’ and the ‘Battie of Algiers’, an importance conspiciously absent in so much contemporary British cinema.

WilI this movie ever achieve a wide distribution? lt’s hard to say. The ‘Whitehaven News’ whose letterhead is a smokey industrial wasteland with what looks like a tophatted woman in skirts sitting on a stone monument, proclaiming the Latin motto - Perseverance Conquers Ail - and below it the two words - Commerce and Agriculture - is the only paper so far to report on the film.
The film is about what you might find hidden underneath that stone inonument. English miners at Lowca, Cumberland agreed to participate for free in the movie while at work in their own pits. The young people of the city served as non-paid extras. The remaining sections of the film wilI be shot in London and Paris. The finished product will include newsreels of specific Latin American incidents whose participants are either in jail, exiled or dead. One wonders at the numbers of directors and producers who religiously moan about the absence of good scripts, the tedium and shallowness of most contemporary cinema. The newspapers are mines of scenarios. No one yet owns the ‘rights’ on what happened in Bolivia in 1966. There is the great advantage of reality…”.

“…CRONUS. The evolution of this complex artistic manifestation through previous stages created by the group in Paris (taking a prize at the VI Biennale de Paris), London, Madrid and elsewhere in Europe has developed an increasingly rich integration of constructed kinetic sculptural elements, projections of light and sound, and bodily movement. Far from being set pieces in the usual sense of theater or the dance, CRONUS aims at a synthesis of motor and haptic human experience with varied and flexible elements of light, sound and time perception. In order to stimulate an intensified awareness of the interpenetration and simultaneity of these experiences, CRONUS employs a greater degree of predetermined structure and composition than the happenings of Oldenburg and Kaprew, but the nature of this formal outline is invented a new wherever and whenever CRONUS is to take place, providing a spontaneity and fresh awareness to both artists and spectators in each presentation…”

CRONUS 11

LA CITE TRANSPARENTE

1979

“…As part of such a show of intellectual vigour this kind of experimentation has a real point. To the arts-cut, Tory-riddled, sex-in-the-head-battered London theatergoer Taller should provide at least a welcome whiff of foreign travail. And that can only be good for business”.

“Taller Amsterdam has brought to London a ‘presentation’ of visually exciting and mentally provocative experimental quality. I say ‘presentation’ because this particular piece stretches to the point of contortion conventional definitions of ‘theatre’ and ‘drama’…”.

“…’Economy of movement and mathematical precision are not taken to the extreme of Bauhaus dance, but certainly the visual action and thematic concern is reflected in Bauhaus philosophy concerning stage presentation: Unity is heralded by order in multiplicity. Order is the law of the work of art…’ (Die Bauhausbühne, 1922) and ‘Be simple… Start from space, from its law and its mystery’ (Oskar Schlemmer, 1929). It is indeed fascinating.

It is a shame that similarly divergent forms are not being attempted in this country. This definitely must be seen”.

It could be seen as breaking the limits between reality and unreality…”.

Cronus 11

Cronus XI

“Taller Amsterdam investigates human behaviour and the human identity, the collective mind of the masses, the threat of power, and the fears and joys of our time. The group does this in close mutual contact with the masses, without becoming estranged from their exclusive artistic circle. It seeks a place in the crowd and there attempts to rediscover the individual. That is why in the course of the last years they have organised innumerable manifestations in many places such as London, Paris, The Hague, Chicago, New York, Venice, etc... The manifestations consisted of street experiments involving the reactions of people to the actions and objects presented by Taller. The goal of these investigations was to discover the relationships between man, object, space and time. In London in 1967 the group began a series of experiments of this nature entitled ‘Cronus’. This title does not mean anything. ‘Cronus’ is an arbitrary name followed by a number, since one experiment leads to another and each experiment is itself also subject to the changing insights arising from mutual communication and interaction with the public...".

The music is more than just a part

"... ‘Cronus XI’ is not only a spatial construction, nor is it merely ten figures’ mime. The music also plays a part electronic in the first half, and performed manually in the second half. Actually, the music is more than a constituent part. The figures react to the sounds; the clattering of chains, the howling of animals, knocks, the noise of the wind and the surf, and the swelling murmur of church bells. It is as if they receive instructions from the music and promptly, almost automatically carry them out. The music fulfils a different function in the second part. Instead of electronic music, a live ensemble plays eighteenth century music on the viola da gamba. One would expect that this melodious, classical music would give the presentation the character of a concert. However, that is absolutely not the case. Visual and audial media complement one another in a wonderful way. For example, at a certain point the white dolls put on white animal masks which they have taken out of their little black suitcases with rhythmical, robot-like gestures. Through this transformation, the primitive appearance of the dolls lends the music an ethereal beauty from a celestial sphere. After all, the civilised music of man is unimaginable in the jungle.
Explaining the music, the Taller group says the following: ‘The music has not been included as a backdrop. We believe that old music, if it is good, fits into all kinds of surroundings. The importance of music is not that it is so old, historical, but precisely in that it touches us so deeply. The emotions it arouses makes it a phenomenon of the present. However, because we know that the music is old, time (the past) hovers around in our presentation’...".

The structure gives a context

"...‘The architecture is extremely important’, the members of Taller explain, ‘because it indicates the dimension which makes it possible to feel the space and to understand the interdependence of the different things.’
The primitive human actions executed at the command of either screeching or threatening electronic noises in the first part had not only given me a feeling of loneliness, but also one of romantic seclusion such as felt in an attic room, reading or painting — an attic room in a large city. Didn’t the romantic wonder where it was possible to be even lonelier than in a metropolis? Is seems to me that such considerations point to a human quality in the almost mechanical performance of the white mannequins moving about as if in a trance. Others found the human factor to be completely missing or said that they, at least, could not discover it. The Taller group agreed with the latter opinion and thought it best to add the human element, a happy element, to the play. They did this in an equally surprising and original way by creating a red man. That is, a man dressed entirely in red, without a mask, who, at the end of the play enters into the central space - the room - without looking at the others. He proceeds to the table slowly, because speed is a part of everyday reality — and takes a piece of fruit out of a bowl. He eats the fruit. He retraces his steps. He disappears. The play ends. This scene was a complete surprise and I wondered if it was originally a part of the play.
Although I understood that white represented a neutral factor, a negation of natural appearances, a symbol of eternity, still the red man came as a relief, like a bit of common sense, or tasting the forbidden fruit out of free will without having been tempted to do so without fear of being punished. The end came too fast and it seemed more like a fragment, but then the unfinished in art has always been puzzling.
‘Cronus Xl’ received rave reviews in Paris and London. The critic Yuri Kohut, of The Stage and Television Today, wrote: ‘It is a shame that similarly divergent forms are not being attempted in this country. This definitely must be seen.’
It is clear that the members of the Taller group, by means of collective thinking and creating, seek a kind of art and communication which can be understood by all. Moreover, it is clear that they attach great value to individual interpretation of the collective happening. Is this a duality in their thinking and striving? Or do they walk on a mountain ridge, in a manner of speaking, from where they have an extraordinary beautiful view of both sides? “

Proposition 10

“…In the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam an audiovisual room made of mirrors, a large box as it were, bas been constructed to which the public is admitted in smal1 groups.
One steps into a surprising, seemingly boundless world of reflections which, however, proves to be simple and systematically arranged: the floor and two of the walls are divided into black and white squares which are reflected by the other two walls and the ceiling.
Much like the pieces on a chessboard, transparent objects are scattered around the room representing aIl kinds of utensils drawn from the domains of work, the home and leisure time. The visitor can move these pieces around which triggers a reaction from the surroundings. Sounds are produced and film images flash on the walls with each move. This intense barrage of sensory impressions is analogous to the flood of mass media our consumer society subjects
us to daily. A splendid but disconcerting spectacle.
The intentions of ’Proposition 10’ are interesting, however, it still remains to be seen what will be grasped by an average museum visitor who is most likely too aesthetically conditioned to understand the message. On the other hand, the Taller group’s trust in the power of the stimulus-response theory may be too great. This psychological premise is perhaps too limited to foster revolutionary expectations.
Besides, the pretention that no aesthetic is being effected may prove to be a typical artist’s illusion. In any case, their attempt to allow visual inventiveness to function still remains a praiseworthy initiative...”

Man and Reality

“The Group Taller de Montevideo, all of Uruguayan origin, but based in London since 1963, will present in Venice extended versions of their presentations at the last Paris Biennale and at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago, in May. The principal development in their work is from an interior, theatrical relationship with the viewer; they are determined to break mural barriers by extending activities into the thoroughfare. In their own words - ‘Starting as a kinetic experience the Group first sought a new relationship between man and object. The next step Street Experience seeks to face man with reality, which transforms not only the aesthetic aspect but the apprehension of reality itself. At Venice we will fill an area of 12 x 9 metres with the elements to be seen in the photograph of Street Experience’. The members of the group at Venice will be Armando Bergallo, Ernesto Vila and Hector Vilche; at Chicago they were assisted by Teresa Ramos from Chile and two French colleagues Bénédicte Brasseur-Kermadec and Anne Jibe”.

Concern with space

This 35th Biennale of International Art has exploded into life and will run until the 25th of October.
If there is one theme that runs through this year, it is that of a concern with space: the containing of an object in space, the filling of an area, the breaking out from confinement. The basic influences are in evidence beside the younger protagonists. The factor of space may have a deep environmental undertone. The artist today is not ready to accept that a creative spirit is necessarily a lonely one. When Taller de Montevideo of Uruguay sets out his skeletal cubes, it is an invitation to walk through and around and take part in an imaginative involvement.

“…A momentous event happened in Chicago at noon yesterday. The second city, always the bridesmaid to New York when it comes to art, became the first American city to play host to the cubes. In fact, one hundred cubes were moved from the Museum of Contemporary Art on Ontario Street to Pioneer Court. And, what is more important, Chicagoans, often considered philistine by the cognoscente of Manhattan, responded to the cubes with a spontaneous elan.
‘We are really surprised at Chicago’s reaction to this experience’, said Jacqueline Lejeune, press agent for the Museum of Contemporary Art, ‘everyone was very excited. It was absolutely amazing’…”

CRONUS VII

RAVINIA FESTIVAL CHICAGO

1970

“…Here are young artists who feel deeply that the individual contribution to the whole work is less important than the finished product. The magnificent decoration of Gothic cathedrals was carried out with much this same attitude.
But in our age of rampant insistence on the individual - especially of the artist - this group approach comes almost as a new thing.
The cooperative attitude pervades the presentation completely.
It sets the mood that the spectator must follow if the experience is to have any real meaning for him.
First off, one must give up the notion of being a passive spectator. This is an experience
- not a traditional display of paintings or a performance of ballet. Move about the cage slowly, quickly, in several directions. Come close, hang back. Crouch low, stretch out. And be willing to abandon the sense of logic which we insist on overlaying on all so-called serious art.
The Taller of Montevideo will open the doors to a very real nowhere for you. They will plunge you into a world of dreams made palpable. They will expose you to an experience of wrecking madness. They will speed up time and motion and than slow down to an unnatural crawl. They will help you open your mind to whatever sense-impressions you will permit to flow through it.
But do not be led to the belief that this is wholly abstracted…”

“…Can we avoid some thoughts of Cronus who devoured his children out of fear.., or of ‘chronos’ Greek concept of time both present and in historical sequence?

It is that sort of an evening. The eye is stimulated. The ear is agitated. The heart beats a bit faster in the more than strident moments. And a whole floodgate of ideas rushes by as you participate.
I must warn the timid, how that ‘Cronus VII’ is meant as strong meat and drink. It is not for those whose vision of art remains rooted in 19th century artistic concepts. (Not that there is anything wrong with them but it is – let us say - a dance to a different drummer.)
‘Cronus’ is an effort by the Taller de Montevideo to help us redefine our concepts of art, to broaden them. They and the many other artists working with multi-media devices (at least when are as serious and as talented as this group) are attempting to involve the viewer totally in the secret nature of all art.., and so to make it less secret. One ‘experiences’ ‘Cronus’, not views it. The outsider as much as the performer gives the work form and substance.
I commend an exposure to ‘Cronus’ to you. It is a completely together way to move into a rock night in Ravinia. And it sets you up cool and easy for something a little more classical. Either scene-it’s out of sight…”

“For its 1970 season the Ravinia festival is planning a sharp departure from the traditional format of its art exhibitions…”

The media at Ravinia

The Taller de Montevideo is both a mixture and a happy marriage

“…Yet there have been very few occasions in the past when a Chicago audience could see the mixed media in action, and fewer still when the action was presented with the elegance, precision and general elan of the Taller’s current 30-minute offering, ‘Cronus VII’...”.

“…They are good, it seems to me, mostly because they do not satisfy themselves with half-completed gestures or with ideas of’ small scope, shabbily crafted. Most of the mixed-media art I have so far seen has been more impressive in press release than in presentation, and that order is happily reversed at Ravinia.
If the mixed media really have the future their champions claim for them, it will be because examples like that of the Taller de Montevideo are followed and built upon”.

Cronus: Environmental Interaction

“…The first times to be exhibited are ‘Cronus Seven’ a tenantable structure of white wood and chrome in the upstairs Casino Gallery, and a series of plastic movables in the downstairs area. Several Taller products also inhabit the lawn nearby. During the festival, several outdoor activities will continue the group’s environmental interaction with park visitors.A

Like so many contemporary art undertakings, this workshop’s creativity exploits the non categorical ‘partly’. For this reason, it is much easier to say what ‘Cronus Seven’ is not, than to describe what it is.

Altho at least four of its six members perform during the period of exhibition, they are only partly dancers and actors. Within their latticed cage - thin, movable strips of hanging wood – they organize themselves into the environment. Right angles predominate within their temporary home, so each performer moves in straight lines and turns square corners. An object is to be respected as well as tested and displayed, so each reach and grasp is made with concentration and care. There is no waste motion, no ragged edges of self-expression to betray the individual personality.

The environment is exceptionally carefully worked out. At its base there probably is a Corbusier module, or at least a golden section. No distance or linear dimension appears accidental. Flexible laths bent into a surrounding square by a supine performer take on a familiar arc. Other hollow squares and cubes jar and jiggle the eye in picket-fence moire patterns.

The lighting and sound – taped except for an occasional live scream – flash in from many directions in apparently predetermined plan. There are many objects within ‘Cronus’, but they, too, are preconstructed. The humans playing inside and outside – spectators have other mazes to move  thru while watching – have the only choices.

A ‘Cronus’ experience is not a happening; but is various as its inhabitants change relationships and find other ways of filling and fulfilling their environment…”

A technical Biennale

“…The VI Biennale de Paris devoted to artists between the ages of twenty and thirty-five, was largely an ode to technology. The fifty-two-nation show at the City of Paris Museum of Modern Art stressed team projects with the theme of environment, and man in a space orientated computerized future.
The Biennale is divided into four areas:
audiovisual arts, music, film and theatre. Motifs of the audiovisual section were motion and space and the mobility of environment. Spectator participation was emphasized through audiovisual- tactile structures designed to stimulate response as well as to demonstrate technological tooling. Two-dimensional expression formed about five percent of the entire exhibit.
The most striking experiment was Uruguay’s ‘Cronus V’ of the Montevideo Studio Group - Armando Bergallo, Gorki Bollar,
Clara Scremini, Hector Vilche, and Ernesto Vila. The live human body is incorporated into the art form and acts on the movable parts of this technical environment. The group received horary mention from the Biennale jury…”.

Paving way to artistic experience

“…An enigmatic crop of large white, skeletal cube frames about 4ft. square suddenly sprouted on the pavement of Kensington Road at the bottom of Kensington Gardens yesterday.
This was an ‘experience’ staged by a group of young Uruguayan artists, called The Taller de Montevideo, who are based in London.
Its purpose was to involve passersby in sculpture and to test their reaction as they had to weave through, round, and in and out of the cube forest.
The group explained volubly, with flamboyant gesticulation, their doctrine that ‘what people used to call art is finished. It doesn’t work. These structures come from contemporary society, and we want to give them back to society’.
Their manifestation was not intended to be beautiful: ‘We don’t try to provoke a spiritual reaction, or an aesthetic reaction; or, an intellectual reaction, we just want a natural reaction’. This is the opening sentence in a conversation with the public.’…”

Dance moves to news areas

“…The final work in the second Explorations circuit, Cronus, was created by a South American group, Taller de Montevideo. This group from Uruguay, now working in London, was primarily a collection of young people involved in kinetic art. Now they have gone that stage further and brought dancers into their work. In a studio filled in the centre with a structure comprising a collection of white rostrums, with various planes and levels, from which emerge a series of white verticals, the dancers move around forming different relations and compositions with the structure which continually changed its nature owing to the most imaginative use of light and sound. The spectators move around the outside of this central structure so that they have an ever-changing kaleidoscopic vision of the relationship between all these elements. Occasionally a little colour will intrude, through light or coloured gelatines, but in the main it is a white environment which gets occasional dramatic intensity from the sparing use of any other colour. The combination of visual effects with pulsating sound creates a kind of limbo in which the spectator gets the sensation of being suspended between earth and sky.
Again I think the effect would have been greater had there been more room to move, to step away and get new angles of perspective through and across the main structure, and owing to these rather cramped conditions the audience were not so involved as they probably should have been - they were viewing an event rather than being a part of it. Taller de Montevideo is an impressive example of group creation, of painters and dancers working together, each forming an integral part of a whole and further proof of the way in which dance can move into other areas and form an essential part of a new involvement…”.

“As man moves out to space in exploration of the possibilities that the universe may yield up, so are various art forms in new inter-relationship moving out towards a space that knows nothing of the old barriers and frontiers which in the past brought about artistic segregation.
Taller de Montevideo, a South American group primarily involved in kinetic art, is a fine example of the way in which the arts can be related, bringing a new sense of vision not only to those immediately involved in their events but also to the spectator.
The human body, whether static or moving, becomes an integral part of the group’s whole environmental structure which continually changes its nature owing to most imaginative use of light and sound. This would seem to imply that all their work was confined to a studio situation but this is not necessarily so because the group also works outside - in the streets, in the parks - where new relationships are formed with nature and which involve the passers-by who, with the sudden intrusion of the unexpected, realize a new experience that can heighten their sensibility and wonder”

Cronus in Kensington

Taller de Montevideo is a group of Latin American artists founded in 1963 who have exhibited sound and light objects in Paris, The Hague, Madrid, and in Uruguay. They settled in London in 1966 and made a kinetic mural for the Sirrocco Restaurant in Kensington. This year they exhibited at the Midland Art Gallery in Nottingham and will represent Uruguay at the I969 ParisBiennale. From May 15 to 22 they are holding an exhibition of their work and a ‘spectacle’ at 37 De Vere Gardens, London, W.8 (6 to 9 p.m. daily). Hugo Marquez, director of the Theatre for Group 65 in Uruguay, has collaborated with Taller de Montevideo in ‘Cronus’, which in addition to human beings, uses projections and a series of electric light constructions and kinetic works.

Mutation Phenomena

‘Taller’ found more exciting opportunities to extend the limits of each experiment, enabling it to work out new relationships between art and technology – a problem which must be face by contemporary man. In May 1968 the group was invited by Notthingham’s Midland Group Gallery to represent Uruguay in a festival of Latin American Arts. The workshop’s most important work to date is a large kinetic mural in a London restaurant (38 High Street Kensington). The basic idea was conceived collectively – the main aim being the resolution of the problem posed by the individual spaces into which the structure is divided. Within these spaces geometric shapes move at different speeds. Coloured lights multiply the images of these moving shapes reflected in the various mirrors which form the outlines of each space. The integration of actual movement into the work creates a relationship of space and time producing a new type of dialogue for the spectator.
